In this class, we explored traditional American folk art techniques in the realm of carving. We made cutlery by engraving real animal bones with india ink in the manner of early american sailors (scrimshaw). We also used age-appropriate foam instead of wood to explore carving, creating decoy sculptures of real north american birds. Students learned about the rich american tradition of art-making by non-professional artists and related this to their own experience as growing artists. The aesthetics of folk art and children's art are intimately related for me.
