Pop Art Wall Sconce
In this class, we used traditional wood working tools and techniques to create custom lamps. We also learned to solder and create a simple electrical circuit. Students learned about pop art and used popular symbols from their visual culture to form the shapes of their lamps. This gave students an opportunity to reflect on their relationship with popular culture and youth culture in the process of art making. Whenever possible, I try to make artworks with students that they will want to keep, display, and use. This provides a great incentive for them to work hard in class and makes them perceive art as something that is relevant to their lives.
